The Loopers
Loops from the street to a conversation
In The Loopers, an experimental dance and music performance, choreographer Aloun Marchal explores the mechanisms of violence and the possibilities of resistance. Through the concept of the loop, returning and repeating, destructive patterns are tested, revealed and, hopefully, dislocated.
The first part of the performance takes place outside, in the everyday life of the city. Two artists take charge in a public arena by looping song, dance and music. In the second part of the piece, the audience is led into a more intimate space where the tempo slackens and the expressive style is scaled down. Personal experiences of street dance are shared, as well as thoughts about violence, personal and structural. The conversation opens up and the audience is invited to join in.
This piece has its international premiere here at The Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival. It has previously been in residence at Stora Teatern and is jointly produced by the festival and 1024, Västra Götaland’s regional dance production center in Mölndal, Sweden.
Aloun Marchal is a prize-winning French dance artist, improviser, dancer and choreographer residing in Gothenburg. In his art he combines conceptual choreography and street culture and investigates the ways that body, voice and space can create new social situations and in-depth encounters with audiences.
Mpululu Ntuve and Mike Gamble perform in this piece. Mpululu Ntuve is a prize-winning freelance dance artist with a background in classical ballet, modern dance and hip hop. She has participated in a number of performative arts productions and been acclaimed in international events. Mike Gamble is a Sweden-based American choreographer, scenic artist, pedagogue and lecturer with broad experience of artistic and educational work, consistently spotlighting the expressive and social dimensions of street dance.
