The Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival is an international performing arts festival taking place for ten days in August, in the great city of Gothenburg with surroundings. The festival was founded in 1994 and has ever since invited international artists to share their stories with diverse audiences; stories from all around the world; stories that enhance reality. Stories that reflect on the world as it is today, right here and now.
Our programme is diverse, contemporary and spans from dance, theatre and performance work to music and contemporary circus. Our aim is to invite brave and curious artistic work, made by world known companies and exciting, emerging artists. We create a fears blend of icons that have shaped performing arts history and new stars that shape performing arts of today and tomorrow.
Our programme are produced by curators who, with their different perspectives, create a selection for the scenes in Gothenburg. Many factors affect what takes place in the programme: artistic integrity, finance, time schedule, competition, tourability and more. We are always interested in new impulses so please let us know if we have missed out! Please contact our producers or our communication officer if you have any questions!
Find us in five towns
This year, new venues appear on the festival map! In addition to Gothenburg, you’ll find us in Härryda, Uddevalla, Tanum and Vara. The contemporary circus troupe Compagnie XY will be travelling with their 22 acrobats, as will Twisted Feet, Link Bink and Anna Holmström with their action-packed urban dance program. We’ve also invited director Marie Brassard to participate in a regional theatre residency. But it doesn’t end there. Before, during and after the festival we’re working to create even more collaborations between international performance artists and local enthusiasts in Västra Götaland.
Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival is a part of Gothenburg’s Department of Cultural Affairs and it is residing at Stora Teatern in Gothenburg. The festival is produced in close collaboration with all partner venues. Funded by Västra Götalandsregionen, Statens Kulturråd and Nordisk kulturfond. Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival is a member of the european festival community EFFE.
