About

The Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival is an international performing arts festival taking place for ten days in August, in the great city of Gothenburg with surroundings. The festival was founded in 1994 and has ever since invited international artists to share their stories with diverse audiences; stories from all around the world; stories that enhance reality. Stories that reflect on the world as it is today, right here and now.

In 2021 and 2022, due to the pandemic, the festival took a temporary form, with program over the course of a year. The next edition will take place 23–31 of August 2024 and thus it will return to its original format, as a biennial.

Our programme is diverse, contemporary and spans from dance, theatre and performance work to music and contemporary circus. Our aim is to invite brave and curious artistic work, made by world known companies and exciting, emerging artists. We create a fears blend of icons that have shaped performing arts history and new stars that shape performing arts of today and tomorrow.

Our programme are produced by curators who, with their different perspectives, create a selection for the scenes in Gothenburg. Many factors affect what takes place in the programme: artistic integrity, finance, time schedule, competition, tourability and more. We are always interested in new impulses so please let us know if we have missed out! Please contact our producers or our communication officer if you have any questions!

Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival is a part of Gothenburg City Theatre (Göteborgs Stadsteater AB), and it is residing at Stora Teatern. The festival is produced in close collaboration with all partner venues. Funded by Västra Götalandsregionen and Statens Kulturråd.
