Dimas Tivane
When juggling becomes music.
Nkama is a musical juggling solo where rhythm, movement and voice combine to become a very personal and expressive scenic art work. The title means “time” in Changana, a language spoken in southern Mocambique, and the performance explores the way we experience the tempo, the flow and the variability of time. The tempo of the piece oscillates between stillness and intensity when Dimas Tivane plays with moments that stretch out, disappear and suddenly reappear. The result is a compelling and gripping adventure.
Dimas Tivane is a dancer, musician, juggler and singer and in Nkama he gathers his artistic specialties in a unique scenic language. To him, juggling is rhythm. The sound of each object becomes part of the music and each movement becomes a part of the composition. He creates music with his body, his voice and the objects that surround him. In the performance space, everyday objects change into musical instruments and a juggler’s tools. A chair, an orange, a set of keys, a water bottle – they all get new life in his hands. The public is invited to listen in and to participate, and they feel the magnetism of a rhythmic flow in the meeting of song, play and precise performance.
