Skuggorna av Mart (The Shadows of Mart)
Skuggorna av Mart (The Shadows of Mart) is a newly written piece freely inspired by the play Skuggan av Mart (The Shadow of Mart) written in 1948 by the Swedish author Stig Dagerman. The play examines the lives led by those who remain after others have sacrificed themselves for a cause.
What happens to those unable to fulfill the roles expected of them? And what is a hero, actually? Can heroes be questioned at all?
The original play focuses on relations within a family in which one brother, Mart, dies in a resistance struggle. In Skuggorna av Mart, Mattias Andersson and Backa Teater extend the discussion to include society as a whole. In these times of confusion regarding fact and fiction, reality and dream, many questions can be formulated about which values we champion and perhaps even die to defend.
Shadows populate the planet, reality disintegrates, fear dominates. There is nothing worse than being ugly and cowardly. Or than living in the shadow of a Mart.
